What is the CELTA?

The CELTA is a TEFL qualification which prepares you to teach English as a foreign language. You don’t need any existing English language teaching experience or training. It’s usually a 4 or 5 week full time course (but you can also take it part time). Standing up in front of a class for the first time is a daunting prospect, so you need to make sure you have the skills you need to teach effectively. The CELTA prepares you for the classroom in these ways:
1. Taught sessions on methodology, lesson planning, language analysis and language skills. (In total, you’ll have 120 hours of input.)
2. The opportunity to observe experienced teachers in a real-life language classroom situations – so you can see the different skills and techniques they use.
3. Teaching yourself – with helpful and detailed feedback from your tutors. This practical experience is invaluable when you start your first job.
You’ll also complete a few written assignments, and then you’ll be ready for your first job and your first students.

CELTA at IH Toulouse

IH Toulouse is a small school but has a very warm, friendly, supportive atmosphere.

We have an excellent resource library with plenty of reference books, course books, methodology books and photocopiable resources.  We also have two photocopiers. To relax, we have a nice garden with picnic benches and a kitchen equipped with a microwave and coffee and tea making facilities.

We generally run small courses, so it enables the tutors to spend more time giving trainees individualised support and attention. The CELTA can be quite a tough course and we, the tutors, emphasise the importance of being available and approachable. We generally have teaching practice in the evenings, so the courses are late-starting (11am), so for those who don’t like early mornings, this is a good place to come!

Your fellow students will be a good mix of all ages, native, non-native speakers.

About IH Toulouse

About the School

The IH Toulouse centre is located in the Blagnac area of Toulouse, near the airport and many big companies such as Airbus. The school is set on a quiet, leafy road; a quick drive or tram ride away from the centre of the city.

It has been a busy few years for the school: moving to new premises and increasing their numbers of students and staff.

The team is led by Joanne who has many years experience with running a school and teacher training. Her philosophy is to invest time and energy in her students training needs, so they can achieve their goals.

Life in and around Toulouse

Toulouse is known as the ‘pink city’ – why? Because many of the buildings are made of red brick and when the sun sets the buildings glow a beautiful pink colour. It’s magnificent.

Toulouse is a small but vibrant city. It has a laid-back, friendly atmosphere and a huge student population. The centre of Toulouse is a wonderful place to stroll about. You can walk by the river, visit the main square, relax in a park such as the jardin des plantes. There are many lovely restaurants and bars in town, where you can enjoy a coffee or a beer and watch the world go by.

The locals say it is the best city to live in in France as it is located between the Mediterranean and Atlantic, but it is also near the Pyrenees.

Studying at IH Toulouse

The school is located very close to the airport (just a five-minute drive). There are many direct flights from Europe to Toulouse-Blagnac airport. You can also easily reach Toulouse by train. There is a large station (Matabiau) in the centre of the city.

The school is well-connected by public transport. The nearest tram stop (which goes to the centre of the city and also connects to the underground lines) is a three-minute walk away. It takes 30-40 minutes to get from the school to the centre of the city by tram. If you want to bring a car, the school also has a car park.

There is a very big shopping centre just a 20-minute walk away, where you can find lots of cafes and restaurants. In the centre of Toulouse, you will have the full spread of French cuisine to choose from! To give you an idea of prices, a kilo of oranges in market or supermarket will cost about €2, a Big Mac Meal €8, and a bottle of beer in a local bar €4. We are sure you’ll want to try our local food, but this just gives you an idea!

Most students find accommodation via Airbnb or Roomlala. If you prefer to stay with a host family it will give you a very affordable option, and lets you experience French family life. We can give you advice on these options, but we leave all the details to you.

Claire Young

I studied politics at university but after graduating in 2000, I left the UK and started my career in the TEFL world. I did my CELTA at IH Barcelona in 2000, did my DELTA in 2005, and became a teacher trainer in 2010. I have taught in Spain, Mexico, Turkey, Libya, Tanzania, Sudan and South Sudan. I am now director of studies and head of teacher training at IH Toulouse.

I really enjoyed adding variety to my lessons through adapting and personalising the coursebook material to make it more interesting and relevant to my students. I try and help my trainees develop this skill during the CELTA course, in the hope that they leave with the tools and techniques to be able to go into any classroom with confidence.

Yes, absolutely. Three out of four English language teaching jobs worldwide specifically require a CELTA qualification, making it the gold standard in the TEFL industry. Because it is a qualification from Cambridge Assessment English, employers globally recognize and highly regard the training you will receive with us.
Do I need to be a native English speaker or have previous teaching experience to enroll?
You do not need to be a native speaker, nor do you need prior teaching experience to take the CELTA at IH Toulouse. The course is designed for those new to the profession, provided you have a high level of English proficiency (typically C1 or C2 standard). Our trainers will guide you through the fundamentals of teaching from day one.
Can I work my regular job while completing the CELTA training?
If you choose an intensive four-week CELTA course at IH Toulouse, we strongly advise against working alongside it.
