CELTA (Certificate in Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages) is a globally recognised, Cambridge-accredited Level 5 qualification. It’s the most requested certification in English language teaching.
Plenty of online courses promise a TEFL certificate in 60 hours but the qualification you choose matters and employers know the difference.
CELTA requires 120 hours of contact time, six hours of assessed teaching practice with real students, and four written assignments. It’s intensive because there are many skills to learn to get you classroom-ready.
The result: CELTA graduates are hireable from day one. Schools trust the qualification because they know what it covers.

Delivered at an IH school over four to five weeks full-time, or part-time over several months. You attend in person, teach real students in a classroom, and work alongside a cohort of other trainees.

CELTA also opens the door to further qualifications. Teachers who want to specialise or move into academic management typically use it as the foundation for DELTA or other advanced training.

It is a broad term covering qualifications, jobs, and the industry as a whole. When people talk about a TEFL qualification, they mean a course that trains you to teach English, but not all TEFL courses are equal.
Some are rigorous, externally accredited programmes with real teaching practice and proper assessment. Others are short online courses with little preparation and even less employer recognition.
CELTA is the gold standard. Accredited by Cambridge Assessment English, it requires a minimum of 120 hours of training and 6 hours of observed teaching practice with real students. Most reputable schools, including all IH schools, require CELTA or equivalent when hiring. If you are serious about a career in ELT, CELTA is where to start.

By taking this course I have also discovered the path that I will need to stay on if I wish to make my dream of becoming a good teacher a reality.
I really appreciate what I learned from all the trainers and peers on the course. I did both the CELTA course and CYLT course at IH Bangkok, after which I couldn’t even believe myself for being professional in teaching in almost all aspects. Once I step into the classroom, I know what I should do with my lesson materials, I aim to achieve in my lesson, I can do better for next lessons. The CELTA course I took over the summer was run online, and being online did not take away from the excellence of the course. The course encourages teachers to teach real students in a student centred way, thus making the experience very authentic. All in all, it is very intense but well worth the money spent.

The CELTA is delivered in three formats:
• Full Time: delivered face-to-face over a period of 4 to 5 weeks. This intensive course is ideal for people who need to obtain the qualification as soon as possible.
• Part Time: delivered face-to-face, it will suit people who are working at the same time. The length of the part-time course varies from one teacher training centre to another, but it usually lasts from between a few months to a year.
• Online: this is a blended learning course which means that some of it is online, and some of it is face-to-face. It is ideal for people who want more flexibility or who have a long commute to the Teacher Training Centre. This format of the CELTA course combines online self-study with hands-on teaching practice. The length of the online courses may vary from a few months to a year depending on the delivery mode offered by the Teacher Training Centre.
Candidates interested in applying for this course will go through the following process:
• Fill in the online application form.
• You will receive a reply within 48 hours.
• If you are successful, you will receive a more detailed application form which you should fill out. This will be sent directly to the school you are interested in.
• The school will review your application form and let you know if you can proceed to the next step.
• The school will book an interview task where you will speak to a CELTA course tutor.
• The school will inform you if you have been accepted on the course.
On the CELTA course, candidates need to be officially accepted on the course by the Teacher Training Centre. This is because centres act on behalf of Cambridge Assessment English and in order to maintain the highest industry standards, they will only accept candidates they believe will pass the course. Candidates need to be committed and successfully complete the various tasks to take the CELTA. This meticulous selection process is designed in the interest of the candidate to guarantee that high quality standards are maintained on the course.
Most centres will send you a recommended reading list. It is not necessary for you to study all the books, but they will help you start reflecting on the course. These books will most likely become your future reference before, during and after you have completed the CELTA course.

Most centres also recommend having a good grammar book even if English is your first language so you can revise before the course. The grammar book will also come in handy as a reference during the course.
CELTA centres will also have a library available for students to use during the course.
