What is the CELTA?

The CELTA is a TEFL qualification which prepares you to teach English as a foreign language. You don’t need any existing English language teaching experience or training. It’s usually a 4 or 5 week full time course (but you can also take it part time). Standing up in front of a class for the first time is a daunting prospect, so you need to make sure you have the skills you need to teach effectively. The CELTA prepares you for the classroom in these ways:
1. Taught sessions on methodology, lesson planning, language analysis and language skills. (In total, you’ll have 120 hours of input.)
2. The opportunity to observe experienced teachers in a real-life language classroom situations – so you can see the different skills and techniques they use.
3. Teaching yourself – with helpful and detailed feedback from your tutors. This practical experience is invaluable when you start your first job.
You’ll also complete a few written assignments, and then you’ll be ready for your first job and your first students.

Will getting my CELTA at IH Madrid actually help me find a teaching job abroad?
Yes, the CELTA is considered the gold standard in the TEFL industry and is the world's most widely-recognised English teaching qualification. In fact, three out of four English language teaching jobs globally require a CELTA qualification. By training with us, you are earning a certificate from Cambridge Assessment English that employers specifically look for.
Do I need to be a native English speaker or have prior teaching experience to take this course?
No prior teaching experience is required to enroll in the CELTA at IH Madrid, as the course is designed to train you from the ground up. You also do not need to be a native speaker, but you must have a high level of English proficiency (typically C1 or C2) to successfully teach the language. Our application process will help determine if your current English level is right for the course.
How will I be assessed during the course, and is there a final exam I have to pass?
There is no final written exam for the CELTA; instead, you are assessed continuously throughout your time at IH Madrid. Your final grade is based on a combination of practical teaching practice with real students and a series of written assignments. This hands-on approach ensures you graduate with the practical skills and confidence needed to step straight into a classroom.
Can I keep working my full-time job while completing my CELTA at IH Madrid?
If you choose our intensive four-week CELTA format, it is a highly demanding full-time commitment, and we strongly advise against working alongside it. However, IH Madrid often provides part-time options designed specifically for those who need to balance their studies with work or other commitments. We recommend reviewing our current schedule offerings to find the pace that best fits your lifestyle.
